Don’t Forget About the Outer Courts

Early in the 2000 U.S. Open, I found myself sitting in the first row at an outer court match, watching as a 19-year-old Swiss prospect, Roger Federer, routed the doubles specialist Daniel Nestor. There were no more than 50 people in attendance. The ball was jumping off Federer’s racket, so like any tennis aficionado, I emailed some friends with a tip: “Keep an eye on Federer. He could reach the Top 10 some day.”
